The Student Newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Volume XVI, Number 8 Charlotte, North Carolina Thursday, August 28 1980 Goals Set For Academic Year By Teresa Skipper Carolina Journal News Editor In a speech last Monday, Chancellor E.K. Fretwell Jr. said UNCC was “emerging as the major metropolitan university of the I Carolinas.” The speech was delivered at the opening convocation for the faculty and staff. The core of Fretwell’s speech was a list of six “action steps” ■ that held a few surprises. In the first step the faculty was | urged to achieve six goals which ■ Fretwell had outlined for students. The second step was to review what the university offers academically I with the possibility of adding and dropping some areas of study. Ex amples of these are world wide trade and transportation, communication, and allied health. The third step was to make good Fretwell use of the new administration con figuration. Related to the new ad ministration structure, Fretwell com mented on the ongoing search for Vice Chancellor for Academic / a^s and Vice Chancellor for Student Af fairs. Professors Joseph Spence and Harvey Murphy respectively are heading committees to fill these posi tions. Another proposal Fretwell made was “examination by a standing faculty committee of a proposed pro cedure for handling undergraduate student academic grievances.” Also proposed was a chancellor’s Hearing Panel consisting of faculty staff and students which in many ways replaces the University Court. The major differences in the two bodies is the Hearing Panel will be mostly a fact-finding committee in the more serious matters, and as a reviewing body in cased appealed to the Chancellor’s Office. The panel will not review separately from the Chancellor but will help him in making his deci sions. The fourth point was to achieve an effective ‘people mix’. According to Fretwell the university should not just cater the the student age group, which he estimates may average in the high 20’s, but to all ages through camps and conferences. The fifth point was to use the entire community as a teaching resource. Fretwell in turn stated UNCC could return the favor “by being a trainer of trainers.” The last point Fretwell made was to “Intensify efforts to tell the UNCC story.” In other words to tell the peo ple of Charlotte about the excellent faculty we have, and about the major headway the university is making in helping the community. Fretwell’s speech contained several other significant points including the fact that the university made 1.7 million dollars through contracts and grants, and the UNCC Foundation. Construction Moves Traffic By Teresa Skipper Carolina Journal News Editor Due to construction and inadequate visitor parking, UNCC parking and traffic will under go some changes in the com ing semester. Construction of the apartment complex and the Friday building will cause the portion of I Mary Alexander Road between the entrances of the physical plant to be closed. During a recent traffic committee meet- ln g it was decided to try j rerouting to temporary Parking lots near the observatory, A parking sticker will still be ■ pessary for this area. The committee also proposed three alter natives to increase the visitor parking already available in the area below the gymnasium. The alternatives are: (a) expand visitor parking below the deck to at least half of the parking area below the gym. This would result in a reloca tion of over 100 student spaces, (b) reallocate the upper parking deck and the parking lot behind Cone Center to visitors. Those currently parking on the upper deck would move to the lower deck. Similar to the first alter- Continued On Page 2
